Washing machine not starting

Start with the supply rather than the machine. Check the wall switch, look for a tripped MCB, and make sure the plug and lead are undamaged with no loose connection. If the socket is fine, the fault is usually one of three things: a door interlock that is no longer confirming the door is shut, a failed mains filter, or a control board that has lost its supply. A door interlock is a small, inexpensive part and a common cause — if the machine is completely dead but the socket is live, it is the first thing our technician tests.

Loud noises from the washing machine

A rhythmic knock that grows louder as the spin speeds up almost always means worn drum bearings. A single scraping or rattling noise is more often something trapped between the outer tub and the drum — coins, hair clips, buttons and the wires from underwired bras are what we recover most often. Left in place, a loose object will eventually score the drum or puncture the tub, which turns a small job into an expensive one. Stop using the machine and book a visit.

Vibration and walking during the spin

The most common cause is simply that the machine is not level. Front load machines have adjustable feet for exactly this reason, and a floor that is out by a few millimetres is enough to set one walking. Check also that all the transit bolts were removed when it was installed — a surprising number of machines are still running with one in place. If the machine is level and still shakes, the suspension struts or the counterweight bolts are the next thing to look at.

Water spilling from the detergent drawer

Usually one of four things: water pressure higher than the inlet valve is designed for, too much detergent leaving a set gel in the drawer, a drawer housing partially blocked with old powder, or a blocked drain path pushing water back up the channel. Pull the drawer out completely, wash it in hot water and clear the housing behind it with a brush. If it still overflows, the inlet valve or the pressure system needs testing properly.

Over-filling or under-filling with water

This is nearly always the pressure switch and its air tube, which is how the machine measures the water level. A split in the tube, a blocked pressure chamber, or a switch that has drifted out of calibration all produce the same symptom. It is not a fault to keep using — an over-filling machine can flood the room, and an under-filling one will not rinse detergent out of your clothes properly.

Washing machine not spinning properly

Spinning and draining are linked: most machines will refuse to spin until the water is out. So a spin failure usually starts as a drainage failure — a blocked filter, a kinked or clogged drain hose, or a drain pump with a jammed impeller. If the machine drains normally and still will not spin, the likely causes are a stretched or broken drive belt, worn motor brushes, or a lid or door switch that is not confirming the machine is closed.

When to stop using the machine
